Finding Rest: Heavy is the Head that Bears the Seizures

This summer, I had the privilege to live at the cottage in South Algonquin. Actually, before marrying Shawn, I never had a cottage to visit. What a blessing! I lost my job in July 2023 out east due to a seizure which I was told I was a liability. They did not offer me modified work to accommodate the Epilepsy. Sadly, employers do not look out for their employees when they need it the most (only a small few in my career). Regardless, I needed some rest.

So my husband, dog and I travelled back the 3 days to Ontario with NO HOME! It was a bit stressful as we had a plan to look for a place in October but now that was not an option. My work said I had 24 hours to head back to Ontario. YIKES!

Talk about not having a place to permanently rest your head! We were blessed to stay up at the cottage. A place to rest! We enjoyed the peace, the air, the trees, the lake, and the sunrises and the sunsets. The clear skies at night, it was like there were so many fireflies stuck in the sky (Timon: They’re fireflies. Fireflies that, uh… got stuck up on that big bluish-black thing. “The Lion King”).

I don’t miss the 40 mosquito bites or using the outhouse and did I mention the enormous spiders? I did get to swim, read on the dock, walk Maurice play with his dog cousins and get to know my father-in-law better. The outdoor showers were fantastic, lake water made my hair so soft!

My Hands at Work

I thank God I was able to rest, depend on my husband with finances (I have always been very independent in all the things I do and have) and appreciate a toilet. All in all, despite Epilepsy, I was able to work on me, and I gave my brain a rest. To let my creative juices out I crocheted some hats, leggings, fingerless gloves, and socks. Well, I was able to set them up at a consignment shop in Barry’s Bay, Sigrid Bluebird Local Arts Collective. I also started making digital prints!

I know that everyone is not able to live in a cottage for a few months, but there are other things you can do to help deal with your issues. Sit in your garden, go for a swim, walk through a park, have a picnic, game (I know there are some video gamers out there, my husband included), or read a book. What do you do? I genuinely want to know.

Until next time, ta ta.
